What is IPL hair removal?
IPL (Intense pulsed light) is a broad-spectrum light that scatters across the skin to help with permanent hair reduction. It directs light at the melanin, (the pigment that gives skin and hair its colour) in the hair follicle, damaging the root to help break the cycle of hair regrowth.
How does it work?
To make IPL hair removal work more effectively the area is shaved beforehand so that the light can indirectly reach the hair follicle. A gel is applied to the skin before treatment begins. The handheld IPL device is held against the skin firing a shot of intense pulsed light (IPL) directly through the skin to the hair follicle to damage the root.
Does IPL treatment hurt?
The sensation can feel hot and tingly, some people describe it as being flicked with a hot elastic band. The process is very quick so the pain does not last for long.
Who can have IPL?
IPL treatment is not always suitable for everyone
- Not as effective on light blonde, red, white and grey hair as there is not enough contrast in pigment between the hair and the skin
- Not generally suitable for dark skin tones for the same reasons
- The best candidates for IPL are those with pale to medium skin and dark hair
Treatment is not recommended for?
- Pregnant women
- People with certain skin/hair conditions
- Clients undergoing certain treatments
How many treatments will I need?
6 to 10 treatments four weeks apart
Things to avoid (two weeks before and after)
- Direct sunlight (apply sunscreen for 30 days)
- Tanning beds
- Chemical peels
- Collagen injections
- Ibuprofen and aspirin
- Creams that contain Vitamin A or Glycolic acid
